Morgellons

Morgellons disease is a dermatological disease that is the result of fibers underneath, embedded in, and erupting from unbroken skin or slow-healing sores. Because this condition is relatively uncommon it is often misdiagnosed as a psychological disorder. However, this disease is very real and its symptoms can be extremely painful and interfere with daily activities.

Morgellons disease is much more than an itching sensation. This disease, when untreated, can significantly affect the patient’s quality of life. Symptoms can include:

● Skin irritation ● Skin rashes and/or sores ● Crawling, and even stinging, sensation under the skin ● Fibers (darker stringy material) on the skin ● Aching joints ● Fatigue ● Brain fog ● Depression ● Short-term memory loss

According to the Morgellons Research Foundation, more than 14,000 families are affected by the disease. It is most commonly seen in middle-aged white women.

Morgellons disease has been linked to those with hypothyroidism and Lyme disease. Individuals are at greater risk if they have been exposed to a tick or have blood test results indicating they were bitten by a tick. Varying species of the Lyme spirochete bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi and co-infecting pathogens have been found within bodily fluids and specimens collected from Morgellons patients. Individuals suffering from Morgellons may experience symptoms similar to that of Lyme disease, including those within the musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiovascular systems.

It is important to note that although this disease is a form of an infection, there is no evidence that it is contagious.

Treatment of Morgellons includes uncovering the root cause and treat the underlying infection by killing the harmful bacteria that is triggering the disease while also healing the skin.
